Frequently asked questions

MultiTrip

I am going skiing - can I purchase ski cover?

Yes. We have a winter sports add-on that can be included on your policy. If you are purchasing a MultiTrip policy as a new customer, you will be given the option to add this to your policy when purchasing. Once you have purchased and you are an existing MultiTrip customer you can add this add-on at any time prior to travelling in MyVhi.

How often can I travel on my MultiTrip policy?

There is no restriction on the number of times you can go away during the period of insurance on your MultiTrip insurance policy.

Please ensure you familiarise yourself with the trip duration limits on this policy. Some health insurers provide a trip duration limit of only 31 days. If this lower limit applies on your Private Medical Insurance plan with another provider, claims under Medical Expenses (Hospital Treatment) will only be paid if you have a valid claim under your domestic Private Medical Insurance plan. The maximum trip duration covered on your policy depends on your age and the zone you intend to travel to, as per table below.

Can I extend the maximum trip duration limits on my MultiTrip policy?

The maximum trip duration we can offer on a MultiTrip policy depends on your age. However, we offer a range of trip duration add-ons, see below. If you are purchasing a MultiTrip policy as a new customer you will be given the option to add this to your policy when purchasing. If you are an existing MultiTrip customer you can purchase this add-on in MyVhi.

How can I register for Lounge Access?

Enjoy complimentary access to a LoungeKey™ airport lounge courtesy of Vhi MultiTrip travel insurance. This is a free and exclusive service available to you once your flight is delayed for more than one hour.

You will need to register your flight(s) online on vhi.loungeaccess.ie at least 2 hours before your scheduled departure time. Once you have registered, you will be contacted with details on how to access the lounge if your flight’s delayed by one or more hours.

Full terms and conditions, FAQs and details on how to register your flight, can be found on www.vhi.loungeaccess.ie

Is there a policy excess on my benefits?

Yes, there is an excess of €85 on your MultiTrip policy, which you will pay per person, per claim. You can waive that excess for a very small cost by purchasing the excess waiver.

If you are purchasing a MultiTrip policy as a new customer, you will be given the option to add the excess waiver to your policy when purchasing. If you are an existing customer you can purchase this at your renewal.

International

Do I have to be moving abroad for a certain length of time to be eligible for this policy?

You must be travelling or moving abroad for a period of 6 months or more to be eligible for Vhi International. We recommend you purchase this policy prior to travelling or moving abroad.

Are there different policies for different countries?

Yes. Vhi International is split into three different geographical areas. They are:

  • Europe
  • Worldwide, excluding USA and Caribbean
  • Worldwide

Are there any waiting periods for this policy?

Yes. The waiting periods on an International policy are:

  • 4 months for any known or planned in-patient treatment.
  • 5 years for any pre-existing conditions.
  • 10 months for maternity benefits (if applicable).

Please note: if you have already served the pre-existing conditions and maternity waiting period on your private health insurance plan, you will not have to serve that period again. If you have only partially satisfied the waiting periods, we will recognise the time served on your private health insurance plan. If you have not held private health insurance at all, or had a break in cover the full waiting periods listed will apply.
