Vhi Healthcare announces the extension of its “Vhi Hospital@Home” service into the West of Ireland
16 new jobs created in Galway
18 July 2017: Vhi Healthcare today announced the extension of its newly rebranded Vhi Hospital@Home service to Galway providing hospital-in-the-home services to Vhi customers from 11th September 2017. The expansion of the service, formerly known as “Vhi Homecare”, will create up to 16 new jobs and offer an enhanced service to customers in the West of Ireland.
Vhi Hospital@Home is a consultant-led hospital-in-the-home service allowing suitable patients to leave hospital earlier and continue treatments in their own home under the excellent care of our doctors and nurses.
Making the announcement, Dr Bernadette Carr, Medical Director, Vhi said: “We are delighted to make this innovative service available to our customers in Galway. Vhi Hospital@Home is further evidence of our commitment to providing Vhi Healthcare members with the opportunity to be cared for at home. Research has shown that patients prefer to be treated for certain medical conditions in the comfort of their own home, with their family and friends around, them rather than in hospital. The 98% satisfaction rate of our Vhi Hospital@Home service is representative of this fact. I am also confident that the expansion of our Vhi Hospital@Home service in Galway will allow some pressure to be taken off public hospitals, and freeing up much needed beds in the public hospital system.”
Since the launch of Vhi’s hospital-in-the-home service in 2010, over 6,000 Vhi Healthcare Leinster based customers have been treated in their home rather than in hospital. This equates to a saving of 78,000 hospital day beds and a claims cost saving of over €27 million. By extending Vhi Hospital@Home to Galway, Vhi Healthcare expects to save an additional 1,400 patient bed-days in the first year of operation, and 1,600 in the second year.
Initially, the new service in the west of Ireland will be available to suitable Vhi Healthcare members living within a 30 kilometre radius of Galway city. The Vhi Hospital@Home service is the only hospital-in-the-home service that is externally accredited by an internationally recognised accreditation body (Joint Commission International - JCI).
