What does Plan P cover?
Plan P provides cover for in-patient public hospital charges. It also offers reduced waiting periods should you choose to upgrade to a private health insurance plan.
Why is Plan P closing?
Public hospital charges were abolished by the Government on 17th April 2023. As a result, Plan P has been discontinued, so your policy has been cancelled.
I have paid for the full year, will I get a refund?
If you renewed before 17th April 2023, and have paid in full, you will be due a refund.
We will write to you once your plan has closed and let you know if you are due a refund or not.
What is the difference between Plan P and Private Medical Insurance (PMI)?
Plan P covered only the public hospital bed levy of €80 a night, up to a maximum of 10 nights. PMI offers a wide range of benefits, treatments and procedures in both public and private hospitals, depending on the plan.

If I take out PMI, will I be covered straight away?
Your time spent on Plan P will count towards your waiting period on a PMI plan and we will preserve this waiting period credit until 31st December 2023, to ensure you have time to decide on the option that best suits your needs.
In addition, we will waive the upgrade waiting period which would normally apply, once you take out a PMI policy before 31st December 2023.
