Vhi CEO John O’Dwyer to step down in 2021 following 8 years at the helm

The Board of Vhi commences a Recruitment process for a successor

21 October 2020 - The Board of Vhi has announced that John O’Dwyer, CEO of Vhi for the past 8 years, is to step down in 2021 as planned. A recruitment process to identify his successor has commenced.

Paul O’Faherty, Chairman Designate Vhi said, “John has been an excellent leader of Vhi. Since his appointment in 2012, he has successfully steered the organisation through some of the most significant changes in its history, leaving a well-financed, transformed company with a culture relentlessly focused on meeting our customers’ healthcare needs. He leaves us a company that is very well placed to meet the challenges that inevitably lie ahead.”

He continued, “John has consistently put customers at the front and centre of all decisions and has nurtured a customer care culture that is palpable and real. This has helped make Vhi one of the most trusted and respected brands in Ireland. During his tenure, John oversaw the development and implementation of a long-term strategic business plan, which firstly stabilised the organisation and then positioned it for a return to growth and renewed financial strength. Throughout, John’s focus has been on ensuring that health insurance remains affordable and relevant for customers. Key to this has been combining a compelling health insurance offering with an expanding range of innovative health and wellbeing services.

In 2015, under his stewardship Vhi was authorised by the Central Bank of Ireland, a major milestone in the history of Vhi and hugely important in terms of Vhi’s ability to grow and develop.

John started at Vhi at 17 years of age and rose through the ranks before leaving to take up senior international portfolios at BUPA, Friends First and Achmea and eventually returning to Vhi to take on the role of CEO in 2012.  John has decided that the time is right for him to move onto the next phase of his career. We wish him the very best and thank him for his service to Vhi.”

He added, “the Board of Vhi is acutely aware of the challenges that Ireland faces as we seek to navigate the uncertainties of living with Covid 19. As Ireland’s leading private health insurance company with over 1 million customers Vhi will continue to play a vital role in supporting and protecting the healthcare needs of our customers in this strange and changing environment. These challenges will be among those to be addressed by a new CEO who we plan to identify through a formal recruitment process over the coming months.”
