Digital health: Empowering employee wellbeing

As technology continues to evolve, many organisations are embracing its possibilities to offer their employees more flexibility and control over their health.

From virtual doctor visits to wellness apps and digital health screenings, tech-enabled solutions are helping to overcome traditional barriers to preventative health such as lack of time and limited access to healthcare.

In this article, we’ll explore the positive impact of digital health tools in workplace wellness; how small, proactive actions can fit into busy workdays; and how these tools promote continuous, self-directed health management.

58%

58% of employees say they’d be more likely to take part in preventative health activities if they were available online or through telehealth, while over half of those who only rarely engage say they’d be more inclined to get involved if digital options were on the table.

Given that cost and lack of time remain key barriers preventing employees from engaging in preventative healthcare, it’s no surprise that interest in digital and virtual options is high.

Offerings like telehealth consultations or online scheduling can meet employees where they are, allowing them to fit wellness into their schedules instead of working around clinic hours or lengthy commutes. This flexibility allows employees to stay on top of managing their wellbeing, potentially eliminating those problematic barriers.

From early detection to everyday prevention

Digital health solutions help employees manage their wellbeing in a way that works best for them. Instead of waiting for a once-yearly health screening event, employees can instead engage in small but meaningful health actions on a regular basis.

For example, an employee with a busy schedule can now squeeze in a 15-minute virtual GP consultation during their lunch break or use an app to monitor their blood pressure and stress levels weekly. These tech-enabled micro-actions fit naturally into the workday, helping catch potential issues early and keep overall wellbeing on track.

This added control and autonomy over their health is a welcome development for employees, allowing them to proactively address health concerns when they feel the need, rather than putting things off.

Instead of having to stick to strict clinic hours or sacrifice work time, telehealth services such as online portals and apps give individuals the flexibility to schedule appointments or screenings at times that suit them.

“The advantage of online resources is that they can be more accessible, flexible and scalable, with the potential to reach a greater number of people."

— Prof. Margaret Barry (Chair in Health Promotion and Public Health, University of Galway)

From reactive to proactive health management

This empowerment through choice and convenience helps to foster a culture where taking care of one’s health becomes an ongoing habit, not a one-time task.

Likewise, on-site digital screenings (such as mobile health kiosks or pop-up clinics equipped with digital diagnostic tools) can bring preventive care right to the workplace, and make it more accessible to all employees, including those who previously might not have had the time or resources to get them.

All of these benefits feed into a larger shift from reactive to proactive health management, allowing employees who use wearable devices, health apps, and virtual support to track their wellness indicators continuously and seek advice early.

Preventing illness or managing small problems is far easier (and less costly) than treating advanced issues, and it’s telling that 75% of employees surveyed agree that preventative health activities “save time and money in the long run”. This reflects the personal payoff of proactive care.

How you can support your workforce

To make the most of tech-enabled wellness, organisations can take a few thoughtful steps to embed digital tools into their workplace culture in a way that feels supportive and inclusive:
  • Make digital health part of everyday wellness: Consider offering employees access to telehealth services (e.g., virtual GP or nurse consultations) and online wellness platforms that are easy to use and readily available. Including tools like health-tracking apps or virtual fitness programmes as part of your wellbeing strategy can help position technology as a natural go-to for health information and support.
  • Build in time for health: Adopting more flexible scheduling policies can make a real difference. Allowing employees to take time for a virtual check-up, attend a screening, or simply step away for a wellness break can remove the friction from staying on top of their health. It also sends a strong message that health is valued. In fact, our research shows that flexible scheduling is one of the most important triggers for employees to engage in preventative health.
  • Celebrate small steps: Encourage your team to take small, proactive health actions, like a quick virtual consultation for a minor issue, or signing up for a digital step-count challenge. These low-effort, high-impact habits make prevention feel doable, and help create a culture of ongoing care rather than last-minute intervention.
  • Offer support and training: For some employees, getting started with digital tools may feel overwhelming. Providing short training sessions, how-to videos or user-friendly FAQs can help remove those barriers. When people feel confident using a wellness app or scheduling a virtual appointment, they’re far more likely to make it part of their routine.
